Sexual Assault Prevention on College Campuses: Definitions, Consent, Bystander Intervention
Target audience: fraternity members, sorority members, incoming first-year class, the entire student body

Sexual violence is a serious and complex public health problem, and this presentation focuses on preventing sexual violence perpetration before it happens. You’ll learn prevention strategies consistent with best practices and how to build consent, bystander intervention, and healthy relationship skills with an evidence-informed, interactive session. Attendees will be able to vote (live) with their cellphones on myths about sexual assault.

From an organizational perspective, we will show how to engage campus leadership to promote a campus culture of consent, safety, and respect. From a community perspective, we will highlight initiatives taken to strengthen and support enforcement, response, and reporting on and off campus. This session is only one small component of a comprehensive strategy. To change behavior in the long term, the challenge to the Greek community will be to develop a peer-to-peer awareness campaign to reinforce positive norms and skills related to consent and bystander intervention.

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Define sexual assault and other related terms
  2. Identify forms of consent
  3. Define “Bystander Intervention”
  4. Know how to respond when a sexual assault disclosure is made
  5. Describe Title IX reporting requirements
  6. Know the steps they can take on campus to prevent sexual assaults
  7. Locate the resources available on campus.
  8. Formulate ideas on student-led, peer-to-peer awareness campaigns on consent
    and bystander awareness for their campus.

Hazing Prevention: How Did We Get Here? How Do We Stop It?
Target audience: fraternity members, sorority members, sports team members

By reading any newspaper across the country, you’ll see that hazing has affected Greek organizations, sports teams, and even the school band. Stats show that 55% of college students have been hazed, and 47% were hazed BEFORE they came to college. The unfortunate part is that 9 out of 10 students don’t consider themselves hazed. We often read about the hazing incidents that cause physical injury (or even death), but what about the mental aspects of hazing? What are the ramifications over a lifetime to students?

In this presentation, we’ll review the early history of hazing in society, show hazing incidents highlighted in the media from 2012 – 2015, determine the sociological factors that contribute to the hazing mentality, and then review the hazing laws in your state. Attendees will be able to vote (live), using their mobile device, on whether various activities are considered hazing or not.

We’ll teach students about bystander intervention as it relates to hazing and how to report it when they see it. We’ll also give students ways to eliminate hazing in their chapter by offering a large number of replacement activities that truly promote team building for chapter unity.

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze the origins of hazing
  2. Describe why hazing happens.
  3. Chart the progression of hazing-related media coverage from 2012 to present day
  4. Summarize the hazing laws in their state
  5. Develop bystander intervention techniques to stop hazing before it starts
  6. Produce substitute activities that actually bring the desired results of brotherhood and
    interaction among your members

Strategies for Managerial Excellence
Target audience: fraternity members, sorority members, corporate

Were you thrown into your position in your Fraternity, Sorority, or company with little training or knowledge of that position? One of the biggest problems we face is that we are constantly reinventing the wheel, and we are repeating the same mistakes we made in the past because of a lack of officer/job transition. All of our effective recruitment techniques, fundraising programs, scholarship initiatives, risk management procedures, and other organizational memory is lost when our people leave and this information is not taught to new members.

In this presentation, you’ll learn how to identify and train future leaders, ensure successful officer/job transition between our people, and properly set new goals for the upcoming year. We’ll demonstrate what effective committee structure looks like and why that’s important. We’ll review effective meeting and communication techniques, and underscore the importance of financial responsibilities. Finally, we’ll examine the role of frequent and honest communication with all of your stakeholders.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

Michael Ayalon is an award-winning motivational speaker, entrepreneur and seasoned executive with a passion for Greek life. Prior to becoming a sought-after speaker for Greek University, Mike was a technology entrepreneur in New York, and was the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of an industry-leading website design and search engine optimization company with employees all over the world.
